Your California guard card is valid for two years. Renewal is simple if you start early — and expensive or fatal to your registration if you don't.
The timeline that matters
- 60+ days before expiration — the law says your renewal application must be submitted at least 60 days before your card expires. Renewal fee: $44.
- Expiration day — if you haven't renewed, you can no longer work as a security guard. Working on an expired registration is illegal for you and your employer.
- Up to 60 days after expiration — you can still renew, but you pay a $25 delinquency fee on top: $69 total.
- More than 60 days after expiration — your registration is gone. You submit a brand-new application, redo Live Scan fingerprints, and wait for processing like a first-time applicant.
Annual training is a renewal condition
Since 2023, security guards must complete 8 hours of skills refresher training every year, and your first renewal requires having completed the full 32-hour training course during your first six months. Since January 1, 2026, each year's 8 hours must come from a single BSIS-approved provider that administers and certifies the whole block. Keep every certificate — BSIS or your employer can ask for proof.
